The rules
Every row, every column, and every 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 to 9 with no repeats. A well-formed puzzle always has exactly one valid solution — this tool checks that guarantee when it generates a new grid, so you'll never hit a dead end caused by a broken puzzle.
Basic solving techniques
- Scanning: look at a row, column, or box and work out which digits are still missing.
- Single candidate: if a cell has only one digit that could legally go there, fill it in.
- Single position: if a digit can only fit in one cell within a row, column, or box, place it there even if that cell could also hold other digits.
- Elimination: use the digits already placed in a cell's row, column, and box to rule out candidates one at a time.
Using pencil marks
Turn on Notes and select a cell to jot down candidate digits instead of a final answer. Selecting a cell highlights every peer cell in its row, column, and box, plus any cell that already holds the same value — that visual link is usually enough to spot which candidates a note can safely rule out.
Choosing a difficulty
- Easy — more starting digits, solvable mostly by scanning and single candidates.
- Medium — fewer givens, needs single-position elimination across boxes more often.
- Hard — the fewest givens, expect to lean on pencil marks and multi-step elimination.
Tips for solving faster
- Start with whichever row, column, or box already has the most digits filled in.
- Work through one digit at a time across the whole grid before moving to the next.
- Turn on Relaxed mode from the toolbar if you'd rather solve without a timer or mistake count.

What's the difference between the number pad and typing?
Both do the same thing. Use whichever is faster for you — click a digit on the number pad, or select a cell and press a number key.
Why can't I edit some cells?
Cells that came filled in from the original puzzle are the given clues and can't be changed — only the cells you fill in yourself can be edited or cleared.
