Bit-based units such as Mbps are converted differently from byte-based units such as MB/s.

How transfer time is estimated

Use file size, transfer speed, and connection efficiency to estimate how long a download, upload, or local transfer may take.

Bits vs bytes

Connection speeds such as Mbps are bits per second, while units such as MB/s are bytes per second. The calculator converts file size to bits before estimating duration.

Efficiency

Real transfers often lose some throughput to protocol overhead, Wi-Fi conditions, server limits, or other traffic. The efficiency setting reduces the effective speed before the final estimate.

Common uses

  • Estimate a large download before starting it.
  • Compare upload times across internet plans.
  • Plan a backup or file transfer window.

Calculation notes

The estimate is calculated locally; no file is selected or uploaded.

Preguntas frecuentes

Why is Mbps different from MB/s?

Mbps means megabits per second. MB/s means megabytes per second, and one byte is eight bits.

Why include efficiency?

It represents real-world overhead, so a 100 Mbps connection at 80% efficiency is estimated as 80 Mbps of useful throughput.

Does this measure my actual connection?

No. It estimates time from the values you enter and does not run a speed test.
