How to build UTM campaign URLs
Add campaign tracking parameters to a landing page URL so traffic from email, ads, social posts, and partners is easier to identify in analytics.
Required campaign fields
utm_source identifies where the traffic came from, utm_medium describes the channel, and utm_campaign groups the promotion or initiative. These three are the core fields most analytics teams expect.
Optional fields
utm_term is often used for paid keywords or audience labels. utm_content helps distinguish variants inside the same campaign, such as button-a versus button-b or header-link versus footer-link.
Good naming habits
- Use consistent lowercase names across campaigns.
- Avoid changing a live campaign's naming halfway through reporting.
- Clear a field when you want to remove an existing UTM parameter from a pasted URL.
Campaign notes
The generated URL may reveal campaign names, audiences, or internal naming conventions. Review it before sharing outside your team.
Preguntas frecuentes
What is the difference between source and medium?
Source is the specific referrer, such as newsletter, google, or linkedin. Medium is the channel type, such as email, cpc, social, or referral.
What happens if my base URL already has UTM parameters?
Fields you fill replace existing values. Fields you leave empty remove that UTM parameter from the final URL.
Can I use spaces in campaign names?
The URL builder encodes spaces, but consistent names with hyphens or underscores are usually easier to read in reports.
Does this create a short link?
No. It builds the tracked URL only. Use your own shortener afterward if you need a shorter share link.
