How to convert colors between formats

Formats explained

  • HEX represents red, green, and blue as three pairs of hexadecimal digits, optionally with a fourth pair for alpha.
  • RGB lists red, green, and blue as numbers from 0 to 255.
  • HSL describes a color by hue, saturation, and lightness, which is often more intuitive for picking a shade or tint.
  • HSB (also called HSV) is close to HSL but uses brightness instead of lightness, matching how many color pickers in design tools work.

Typing a color directly

The text field accepts HEX (#335A9C or #335A9C80 with alpha), rgb()/rgba(), and hsl()/hsla() notation. An invalid value stays in the field so you can keep editing it, while the swatch and results keep showing the last valid color.

How to use it

Color format notes

Alpha is preserved in formats that support it. HSB is included for comparison with design tools, while CSS usually uses HEX, RGB(A), or HSL(A).

Does this support transparency?

Yes. An 8-digit HEX value or an rgba()/hsla() value with an alpha channel is parsed and reflected in every format that supports it.

Why does the color picker only show HEX?

The browser's native color input only works with opaque HEX values. Alpha is preserved separately and shown in the RGB(A) and HSL(A) fields.

What is the difference between HSL and HSB?

Both describe hue and saturation the same way. HSL's third value is lightness, where 50% is the purest version of the hue; HSB's third value is brightness, where 100% is the purest version. The same color has different numbers in each.

Can I paste short HEX like #369?

Yes. Three-digit HEX is expanded to six digits, so #369 becomes #336699. Use eight-digit HEX when you also need alpha.
