What is EXIF Viewer and Remover?
The EXIF Viewer & Remover is a tool for inspecting JPEG, PNG, and WebP photo metadata — camera, date, exposure, and GPS — scoring each image's privacy risk, and generating clean copies in batch.
How to inspect and remove photo metadata
Drop one or more photos to see their EXIF fields, a privacy risk score, and GPS location when present — then pick a removal mode and download a clean copy, one at a time or all at once.
What the inspector reads
The reader recognizes common EXIF tags inside a JPEG's APP1 segment — camera, lens, date, exposure, ISO, focal length, and GPS coordinates when present. For PNG and WebP, it detects the presence of metadata chunks (tEXt/eXIf for PNG, EXIF/XMP for WebP), but doesn't list their individual fields the way it does for JPEG.
When GPS coordinates are found, a "View on map" link opens the location in OpenStreetMap.
How the privacy score is calculated
Every photo gets a 0-100 score shown in the "Privacy read" card and as a colored dot in the file list. Resolved GPS coordinates weigh heaviest (55 points), followed by device signals like camera make, model, or lens (22 points) and capture date or time (16 points); photos with more than 6 metadata fields get a further 7-point bump. It's an estimate meant to catch your attention, not a full privacy audit.
Choosing a removal mode
"Remove all metadata" wipes every EXIF and app field from the image. "Remove GPS location only" keeps the rest (camera, date, exposure) and strips just the coordinates — useful when you want to keep a photo's technical details but not its location.
How cleaning works, by format
JPEG files are cleaned losslessly: metadata segments are stripped byte by byte, the image's pixels are never touched, and nothing gets re-encoded — the mode you chose (all or GPS-only) is respected. PNG and WebP are always redrawn on canvas before export, which removes every metadata field at once and ignores the "GPS only" mode for those formats; since canvas re-exports the image, file size and compression can change.
After cleaning
- Use the "Original" and "Cleaned" tabs to compare the preview before downloading.
- Download one photo at a time, or use "Clean all" and "Download all as .zip" for several at once.
- Use "Copy report" to grab a text summary of the fields found and the risk score.
Privacy and page state
Every read and clean happens locally in your browser — no image is sent to a server. The preview and clean copy only exist while the page is open; download the clean copy if you need it before closing the tab or switching photos.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does it say no EXIF was found?
The file may not be a JPEG with readable EXIF, the metadata may already have been stripped, or the image may use metadata fields this lightweight reader does not expose.
Does it remove GPS data?
It depends on the mode you pick. "Remove all metadata" removes GPS along with everything else. "Remove GPS location only" keeps the other fields and strips just the coordinates — but that mode is only honored for JPEG; for PNG and WebP, the canvas redraw always removes every metadata field, GPS included.
Will the cleaned image look exactly the same?
For JPEG, yes — cleaning is lossless and never re-encodes the image, so the original pixels and compression are preserved. For PNG and WebP, the image goes through a canvas redraw before export, which can re-encode the file; compare the Original and Cleaned tabs before replacing an important image.
Does it support PNG or WebP metadata?
The viewer detects metadata chunks in PNG and WebP and still lets you clean them, but only lists individual fields (camera, date, GPS, etc.) for JPEG.
How is the risk score calculated?
Resolved GPS adds 55 points, device signals (make, model, lens) add 22, capture date or time adds 16, and photos with more than 6 metadata fields get a further 7 — the total is capped at 100. It's an estimate meant to guide whether you share a photo, not a forensic audit.
Can I clean several photos at once?
