What is Character Counter?

The Character Counter measures characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, UTF-8 bytes, word frequency, and reading time for a text in real time, with a publishing-limit checker, all locally in your browser.

How to read the Character Counter results

The tool has three tabs — Overview, Frequency, and Reading — that all update live with the editor. Use this guide to pick a publishing limit, understand the live selection box, and interpret the reading estimate.

The three analysis tabs

  • The "Overview" tab highlights user-perceived characters, words, UTF-8 bytes, characters without spaces, sentences, and paragraphs, plus a detail table with JavaScript code units, lines, blank lines, unique words, numbers, links, emails, average characters per word, and the longest word.
  • The "Frequency" tab lists the 12 most repeated words in the text, automatically excluding common articles, prepositions, and connectors in Portuguese, English, and Spanish — there is no toggle to include them back in or switch to word pairs/triplets.
  • The "Reading" tab shows normal reading time, speech time, fast reading time, plus words-per-sentence and words-per-paragraph density.

Live count and selection

The four numbers right below the editor (characters, words, lines, reading time) update on every keystroke.

Selecting any passage of text in the editor fills the "Current selection" box with the same four metrics computed for just that passage, without moving your cursor or deleting the rest of the text.

Limit checker

  • Choose a ready-made profile — No limit, X/Twitter (280), Meta description (160), SEO title (60), SMS (160), Instagram (2200), or LinkedIn (3000) — or type a custom limit.
  • The progress bar stays acid green up to 90% of the limit, turns orange between 90% and 100%, and turns red past it — alongside exact text for how much room is left or how far over you are.
  • The limit counts user-perceived characters (graphemes), not JavaScript code units, so a multi-codepoint emoji still counts as a single character.

How reading time is calculated

The three Reading-tab estimates use fixed words-per-minute speeds — they are not adjustable: 220 wpm for normal reading, 130 wpm for speech, and 300 wpm for fast reading.

The advice line under the numbers changes based on the text's average words per sentence: above 28 words per sentence it suggests shorter sentences, below 8 it flags sentences that may be too choppy, and in between it calls the pace comfortable.

Quick actions and file upload

  • The six quick-action buttons edit the editor's text directly: collapse repeated spaces/tabs, remove extra blank lines, normalize curly quotes and dashes to straight ones, and convert to UPPERCASE, lowercase, or Capitalized Sentences.
  • The upload button accepts a single .txt, .md, .csv, or .json file up to 5 MB and replaces the editor's entire content with the file's text — it does not append to what was already typed.

Content handling

The counter only needs the text currently in the editor; nothing is sent to a server. Use Clear before switching tasks on a shared device or screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are spaces counted as characters?

Yes, the main counter and the limit bar both include spaces. To see the total without them, check "Without spaces" in the Overview tab's detail table.

Why does this count differ from another app?

Different editors count emoji, line endings, and hidden characters differently. This tool counts user-perceived characters (graphemes), not JavaScript code units — the detail table shows both counts side by side. Use the target platform's counter as the final authority when a limit is strict.

Can I change the speed used for reading time?

No. The three Reading-tab estimates use fixed speeds: 220 words per minute for normal reading, 130 for speech, and 300 for fast reading.

Can the frequency list include common words or search for a term?

No. The Frequency tab always shows the 12 most repeated words with common articles, prepositions, and connectors already removed automatically — there's no search field or toggle to change that behavior.

Which files can I load?

The file picker accepts .txt, .md, .csv, and .json files up to 5 MB, and the loaded content replaces the editor's current text. For PDF or formatted documents, copy the text and paste it directly into the editor.

Does the character limit count emoji as multiple characters?

No. The limit checker uses user-perceived characters: an emoji made of several Unicode code points (like a flag or a skin-tone-modified emoji) still counts as a single character.
