How the Flesch Reading Ease score works

Paste English text to see its Flesch Reading Ease score, an estimate of how easy the text is to read.

How it's calculated

The score is based on average sentence length and average syllables per word — shorter sentences and simpler words produce a higher, easier-to-read score.

Reading the score

  • 90-100: very easy
  • 60-69: standard
  • 0-29: very confusing

Worked example

Short sentences with common words, like children's writing, typically score in the 90s. Dense academic or legal writing often scores below 30.

FAQ

Does it work for languages other than English?

The syllable-counting heuristic is tuned for English; scores for other languages will not be reliable.

Why is the syllable count approximate?

Counting syllables exactly requires a pronunciation dictionary. This tool uses a vowel-group heuristic instead, which is accurate enough for a relative score.

What's a good score for general audiences?

Most style guides recommend aiming for 60-70 ("standard") for general web and business writing — easy to read without feeling oversimplified.
