How it's calculated

The score is based on average sentence length and average syllables per word — shorter sentences and simpler words produce a higher, easier-to-read score.

Reading the score

  • 90-100: very easy
  • 60-69: standard
  • 0-29: very confusing

Short sentences with common words, like children's writing, typically score in the 90s. Dense academic or legal writing often scores below 30.

What's a good score for general audiences?
