UNDERSTAND THE TOOL

How to use the Pomodoro timer

The Pomodoro technique

The technique alternates fixed periods of focused work with short breaks, and inserts a longer break after a set number of work sessions, to help sustain concentration without burning out.

Rounds and long breaks

"Rounds before long break" sets how many focus sessions happen before a long break replaces a short one. With the default of 4, the cycle is: focus, short break, focus, short break, focus, short break, focus, long break.

Skip and reset

Skip moves immediately to the next phase without waiting for the countdown, useful when a session ends early. Reset returns to the first focus session and clears the completed-round count.

How to use it

  • Adjust the focus, short break, and long break durations, and the rounds before a long break.
  • Choose Start to begin the countdown.
  • Use Skip or Reset at any time.

Timer behavior

Closing or refreshing the page resets the current session. Background tabs can also drift slightly, so use the timer as a focus aid rather than a precise timesheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the timer keep running in a background tab?

It keeps counting as long as the tab stays open, including in the background, though most browsers slow down inactive tabs slightly, which can make the countdown run a little behind actual clock time.

Does it save my progress if I close the tab?

No. The timer holds its state only in memory for the current page. Closing or reloading the page resets it to a fresh focus session.

Can I change the durations?

Yes, adjust any of the four sliders (focus, short break, long break, and rounds before a long break) at any time; changes apply to the current phase when the timer is not running.

Does it notify me when a session ends?

Yes. A short sound plays automatically when a session ends, so you don't have to be watching the tab; turn it off with the sound checkbox if you'd rather stay quiet. The tab's title also updates with the remaining time and current phase while the timer runs. This tool does not send system notifications outside the browser.
