What is Tip Split Calculator?

A tip split calculator divides a restaurant or group bill — subtotal, tax or service fee, and tip — evenly across everyone paying, so nobody has to do the mental math at the table.

UNDERSTAND THE TOOL

How to split a bill with tip

Splitting a bill gets error-prone once tax, a service charge, and a tip all stack up before dividing across a group. This calculator adds the subtotal, an optional tax or service fee, and the tip percentage, then divides the total evenly across everyone paying.

How the split is calculated

The tip is based on the subtotal alone, not the subtotal plus tax — that mirrors how tipping norms actually work, since tax isn't a service you're tipping for.

Tip amount
subtotal * (tip% / 100)
Total to split
subtotal + tax + tip
Per person
total / people

20% tip on a $60 subtotal, split 4 ways

The tip is $12, bringing the total to $72, or $18 per person.

60 * 0.20 = 12; (60 + 12) / 4 = 18

When an even split doesn't fit

This tool assumes everyone pays the same share and tips at the same rate. If people ordered very different amounts, split by item first and use this calculator only for the shared tip and tax on top.

Typical tip ranges

  • 15–18%: standard for adequate table service in most places.
  • 20%: common for good service, and a frequent default for delivery.
  • 10% or less: usually reserved for counter service or when service was genuinely poor.

Rounding note

The per-person amount isn't rounded to whole cents automatically — round it to match how your group is actually settling up, in cash or by card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the tip calculated before tax?

Yes. The tip is based on the subtotal, while tax or a service fee is added to the total separately.

Can I include a service fee?

Yes — enter it in the tax/fee field so it's included in the shared total.

What if people ordered different amounts?

This split is even by headcount, not by what each person ordered. For an itemized split, total each person's own items first, then use this tool just for the shared tip and tax.

Should everyone tip the same percentage?

The calculator assumes one shared tip rate for the table. If someone wants to tip more or less, start from the even split and adjust their share by hand.

Does it store my bill?

No — the numbers only exist on the page while you're using the tool.
