How to estimate the cost of a 3D print

Break down a print's cost into filament, electricity, and machine time, then add a failure margin and markup to get a sale price.

What's included

  • Filament — weight used × price per kilogram.
  • Electricity — printer wattage × print hours × your electricity rate.
  • Machine time — an optional hourly rate for depreciation and maintenance.

How to use it

  • Enter the filament weight and its price per kilogram.
  • Enter the print duration and the printer's power draw.
  • Optionally add a machine cost per hour, a failure margin, and a markup.

Setting a sale price

The failure margin inflates the cost to cover a share of prints that fail partway through and need reprinting. The markup is then applied on top of that inflated cost to arrive at a suggested sale price, not the raw cost.

FAQ

Does this include the cost of the printer itself?

Not directly — that's what the optional machine cost per hour is for. Divide the printer's price (plus expected maintenance) by its expected lifetime in hours to estimate a reasonable rate.

How do I know the print time in advance?

Your slicer software (Cura, PrusaSlicer, etc.) estimates this before you print — that estimate is what to enter here.

Why add a failure margin if the print succeeds?

It spreads the cost of occasional failed prints (and the filament they waste) across all your successful ones, so pricing stays profitable on average rather than just for a single perfect print.
