The tool uses a different formula per element type. Depth on slabs, walls, and footings is entered in centimeters (or inches in imperial mode), while length, width, and height are in meters (or feet) — a small 10 or 15 cm depth is awkward to type in meters, but length and height are usually already in that unit. Switching between metric and imperial automatically converts the values you've already typed, without losing the piece you were calculating.
