How to calculate your BMI

The formula

Formula
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²Height is entered in centimeters here and converted to meters automatically.

Weight categories

  • Below 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9 — Normal weight
  • 25 to 29.9 — Overweight
  • 30 and above — Obesity

Limitations of BMI

BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so it can overestimate body fat in very muscular people and underestimate it in older adults with reduced muscle mass. It's a quick population-level screening measure, not a diagnosis.

Worked example

BMI
BMI = weight_kg / (height_m * height_m)

70 kg at 1.75 m

The BMI is about 22.9, which falls in the normal adult BMI band.

70 / (1.75 * 1.75) = 22.86

BMI estimate note

BMI is a simple adult screening estimate based only on height and weight. It is not medical advice and does not account for age, pregnancy, muscle mass, or clinical context.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not reliably. Athletes with high muscle mass often score as "overweight" or "obese" by BMI despite low body fat, since the formula can't tell muscle from fat.

What units does this calculator use?

Height in centimeters and weight in kilograms.

Is this medical advice?

No. BMI is a general screening tool. For an individual health assessment, talk to a healthcare professional.

Does BMI work the same for children?

No. Children and teens use age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles, not the adult bands shown by this calculator.
