How to split rent by weight

Use this tool to split rent and shared bills evenly, or by a weighted agreement based on room size, private bathroom, or whatever roommates have already agreed reflects a fair share.

How a weighted split works

Every roommate gets a weight (1 by default). Each share is that roommate's weight divided by the sum of everyone's weights, applied to the combined rent and utilities.

Common reasons to use different weights

  • A noticeably bigger room, or one with its own bathroom.
  • A reserved parking spot or private storage that only one roommate uses.
  • A short-term guest paying a partial share instead of a full one.

Keeping the split fair over time

  • Revisit weights when someone moves in, moves out, or swaps rooms.
  • Agree on how one-off shared costs (a repair, shared furniture) get split before they come up, not after.

Weights are an agreement, not a rule

Weights only reflect what the household agrees is fair — a bigger room or private bathroom is a common reason to use one, but the number itself carries no legal weight. Confirm everyone actually agrees with the model before splitting the real payment.
