Why iPhone photos need converting
iOS saves camera photos as HEIC by default because it compresses more efficiently than JPEG at a similar quality. Most non-Apple apps, older devices, many upload forms, and most web browsers besides Safari still expect JPEG, so converting once keeps a photo usable everywhere.
Quality and orientation
- Quality controls JPEG compression from 10 to 100; higher keeps more detail at a larger file size.
- EXIF orientation is applied before conversion, so photos taken sideways or upside down come out right-side up.
- For a Live Photo, only the still HEIC frame is converted — the paired video motion is not included.

Each photo is sent to a ProntoUso server so it can be decoded — HEIC has no built-in browser decoder outside Safari — and re-encoded as JPEG. It is processed only in memory for that one request and is never written to disk or kept afterward.

What happens to Live Photos?
Only the still HEIC frame converts to JPG. The short video that makes up the rest of a Live Photo is a separate file and is not included.
