How to compress a video

Reduce a video's file size with a quality profile or a target size, with options to lower resolution, remove audio, and adjust output format, maximum FPS, and manual bitrate before downloading the result.

Quality profile or target size

Quality profile is the quickest option: Balanced works well for most clips, Smaller file trades more visual detail for stronger compression, and Best quality preserves more detail at a larger size. Target size analyzes the full duration in two passes and assigns a bitrate intended to keep the result under the number of megabytes you enter.

Choosing an output resolution

Keep original preserves the video's dimensions. 1080p, 720p, and 480p place a maximum bound around the frame while preserving its aspect ratio, including portrait video. A small source is never enlarged, and lowering a large source's resolution often saves more space than aggressive quality compression alone.

Technical options: format, FPS, and manual bitrate

Under "Technical options" you can pick the output format — MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) has the widest compatibility; WebM (VP9 video, Opus audio) often produces smaller files at similar quality, but Safari and some players support it less consistently. Maximum FPS caps the frame rate (60/30/24) without ever raising it above the source video's own rate.

Manual video bitrate replaces the chosen quality profile with an exact kbps value, useful when you already know the bitrate you need — for example, to fit a specific platform's limit. It only applies in quality-profile mode; in target-size mode the bitrate is already derived from the size goal, so a manual value there is ignored.

Which video formats can I upload, and what do I get back?

You can upload MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV, and AVI. The result is an MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) by default, or a WebM (VP9 video, Opus audio) if you choose that format under Technical options.

Should I choose MP4 or WebM for the output?

MP4 is the safer choice for compatibility — it opens in nearly any player, editor, or social platform. WebM often compresses a little better at the same quality level, but it's worth confirming the destination (player, site, device) actually plays WebM first, since Safari and some apps support it less consistently.

Will the target size be exact?

The two-pass encode aims to stay below the target, but container overhead and unusually complex footage can cause a small variation. If the target is impossible for the duration, the tool asks for a larger size instead of producing an unusable video.

Does 720p enlarge a small video?

No. Resolution choices only reduce videos that exceed the selected bound; smaller videos keep their original dimensions. The same goes for maximum FPS — it never raises the source video's own frame rate.

What does the manual video bitrate do?
