How to upscale and enhance an image

Enlarge an image by 2x, 3x, or 4x, apply a profile suited to the content, and compare the original with the result using an interactive divider.

What increasing image resolution actually does

Upscaling creates more pixels through resampling and can improve presentation with sharpening, contrast, and gentle noise reduction. It cannot recover unreadable text, lost focus, or detail that is absent from the source; a better input generally produces a more natural output.

How to choose an enhancement profile

  • Photo: balances detail, color, contrast, sharpening, and gentle noise cleanup.
  • Illustration: prioritizes defined edges and solid-color regions.
  • Text & screenshot: preserves crisp lettering, icons, and interface elements.
  • Standard: uses high-quality resampling without additional enhancement.

Scale, output dimensions, and limits

An 800 × 600 px image becomes 1,600 × 1,200 px at 2x, 2,400 × 1,800 px at 3x, and 3,200 × 2,400 px at 4x. The tool shows projected dimensions before upload and blocks outputs above 12,000 px per side or 50 megapixels.

Enhancement strength and before/after comparison

Strength controls how much of the selected profile's correction is applied. High values may emphasize detail but can also expose noise or halos. After processing, drag the vertical divider to compare the original and upscaled image in the same frame, or open the preview fullscreen.

How to read the comparison and metrics

In the comparison, the area left of the line shows the source file and the area to the right shows the upscaled result. Drag the circle, use arrow keys while the control is focused, or double-click to return it to the center. Below the preview, check the dimensions, file sizes, scale, and profile actually used for that run.

PNG, JPG, or WebP: which format should you choose?

PNG preserves transparency and exports losslessly, so it does not need a quality control. JPG often creates smaller photo files but cannot preserve transparency. WebP offers efficient compression and can keep transparency. For JPG and WebP, quality changes file size, not dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the upscaler invent missing detail with AI?

No. It uses Lanczos resampling and deterministic enhancement filters. The process can make edges and contrast clearer, but it does not reconstruct faces, lettering, or textures that were not present in the original image.

Should I choose 2x, 3x, or 4x enlargement?

Use 2x for a more moderate and usually more natural enlargement. Choose 3x or 4x when you need larger dimensions, keeping in mind that artifacts and blur in the source will become more visible too.

Which profile works best for each image?

Use Photo for photographs, Illustration for drawings and flat-color artwork, Text & screenshot for interfaces or documents, and Standard when you only want to resize without additional correction.

What happens if enhancement strength is too high?

Higher strength reinforces sharpening, contrast, and other profile corrections. Depending on the source, it may also emphasize noise, outlines, or halos. Compare with the divider and lower the value if the result looks artificial.

Why does the result disappear when I change a setting?

The previous upscaled image was produced with the old settings. When scale, profile, strength, format, or quality changes, the tool removes that result to prevent a misleading comparison. Select Upscale image again to create a version with the new settings.

Does moving the divider change the downloaded image?

No. The divider only controls how much of each version is visible in the preview. The download always contains the complete upscaled image without the line, labels, or any part of the source image.

Why can the upscaled file be much larger?

Pixel count grows quickly: doubling both width and height creates four times as many pixels, while 4x creates sixteen times as many. Format and quality also affect size; JPG or WebP can be smaller than PNG for photographs.

Why do some images show very little improvement?

Very blurry, tiny, or heavily compressed images contain little useful information to preserve. The Standard profile also only resamples the image. Try the profile suited to the content and moderate strength, but remember that upscaling cannot recover absent detail.

Why can a 4x enlargement be rejected?

Output is limited to 12,000 pixels per side and 50 megapixels to keep processing reliable. Projected dimensions appear before processing, and the action is disabled when the result would exceed that limit.

Can the upscaled image preserve transparency?

Yes. Export as PNG or WebP to preserve transparency. JPG fills transparent areas with white because JPEG has no alpha channel.

Why does PNG not show a quality option?

PNG is lossless, so the quality percentage used for JPG and WebP does not apply. PNG may create a larger file, but it avoids additional loss from export compression.

Is my image stored on the server?

The image must be sent temporarily to the server for high-resolution upscaling, but it is used only during that request. The source and result are not kept as stored tool content.
